Intensive Training

Small Group Training

Intensive Training Personal or small group training is the best way for your son/daughter to improve as a hockey player. Regular skill and skating development programs are beneficial at improving players; however, Neilson Athletics Inc. goes way beyond regular instruction, greatly enhancing a player's skill with a remarkable amount of personal attention. Corey Neilson is a master at designing complete hockey training programs for the serious up-and-coming players. His attention to detail makes these programs unique.

Intensive Program

This program is a "by-invitation-only" program but you may contact Corey concerning your eligibility. The program consists of all or portions of the following activities depending on participant's age.

Semi-Private Off-Ice Instruction

This is an intense program designed for the serious hockey player. Specifically designed training techniques and machines are utilized to make the aspiring hockey player better. A maximum of five to six participants are allowed in each particular session. We run players through a number of cardiovascular training exercises including both aerobic (biking, swimming, running, skipping, etc.) and anaerobic (sprinting on bikes, hill and parachute sprinting, etc.) training. We use body-weight training for our younger students and free-weight training in older groups to develop power, speed, and strength. Our hockey specific exercises include slide boards, balance boards, reaction balls, over-speed harnesses and a host of other tools and apparatuses designed to increase players' athleticism. A thorough body composition test is recommended to assess the individual's strengths and weaknesses. From that point, Corey Neilson educates the player on how he should eat, sleep and train like a hockey player.

Semi-Private On-Ice Instruction

From basic fundamentals to advanced theory and training, this on-ice program is geared to improve all puck skills and skating. Corey Neilson will work with the parents and players to design an individually tailored program that fits into the mold of the group. There is a maximum of five to six skaters per session. Players are placed into groups with comparable skill level and put through full-tempo drills to advance their hockey knowledge both physically and mentally. A good competitive atmosphere is encouraged to promote a healthy desire to improve and excel. At Neilson Athletics Inc., our specialty and the core element of our program are drills specializing in quick feet and agility training while incorporating functional puck training. "You can always tell when someone's done lessons with Neilson because he can turn and pivot at full speed while puck-handling, passing and shooting at the same time." - Jim Ensom (Former NHL'er - Chicago Blackhawks) .

Video Analysis

Chalk talk (video replaying by coaches) is the wave of the future for all hockey teams. This technique has been proven viable in teaching players to make smarter decisions on ice and enable them to react quicker in various plays. Players must know their exact routes on face-offs, forechecking, where to be in defensive coverage, etc. Corey Neilson has been playing professionally for eight seasons and has been coached by the best. He understands the importance of not only knowing the material but also being able to communicate your knowledge to your teammates, coach, and students. This program is designed to eliminate the 'what-if' situations on the ice that occur so frequently.
