Neilson Athletics now proudly offers team instruction for all age groups and levels. Corey Neilson will work with coaches developing or teaching team skills. Corey will meet with the coaches to prepare a detailed plan to achieve the goals and create objectives for each team. Team Training has been a core business for Neilson Athletics Inc. for the past 10 years and coaches have come back year after year so we can assist in On-Ice and Off-Ice (Dryland and Video Analysis) Training.
Our On-Ice training specializes in skating and skill development and we can focus our sessions on broad areas (ie. Skills or skating in general) or the most specific of skills (ie. Backhand shooting or Pivoting). Our range of expertise covers skill sets including: Advanced and Fundamental Skating Principles, Defense Training, Bodychecking, Shooting, Puck-Handling, and of course the often neglected area of Passing.
Head Instructor, Corey Neilson's, wealth of experience as a professional offensive defenseman for the past 11 seasons as well as his extensive youth and professional coaching resume makes him the perfect asset to any team's training. He has honed his personal skills through great coaching and years of experience at the professional level and is prepared to instill that knowledge upon our local coaches and youth. Our Off-Ice training has both a Dry-Land and Video/Chalk Talk component. We can taylor our program to any age group and work towards the specific areas that they need to improve upon and learn. Please View our Lessons Page for more details on our Dry-Land and Video Training.

Defense Training
A focus on defenseman skills and theory will cover all backward skating fundamentals including pivoting with a stress on keeping square to your man. Blue line shooting and one-timers will be examined in detail, teaching defensemen to walk the line, shooting for deflections and through screens. Breakout passing and clearing the zone high off the glass will be covered, as well as corner escapes and evasive maneuvers to elude forecheckers. Theory about gap control, staying on the defensive side of pile-ups and clearing the front of the net will be explained. We will also explore different ways to play 2-on-1 and 3-on-2, and the proper way to play 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 rushes.
Bodychecking Training
Designed to make the player aware of the physical game around him, this training will teach the proper way to give and receive a body check in all game situations, keeping within the limitations of the rules. There will be instruction on angles and various types of hitting with a concentration on acceleration through the opponent. Players will be paired with someone of the same size and skill level. Whether learning the basic "how to's" or perfecting an already strong physical presence, this training will be help. Safety is emphasized in all aspects of this training.
On-Ice Instruction
Skating and skill development are musts for all hockey players. Being able to know and apply these skills is an asset on every team. Corey will demonstrate precise ways to communicate the skill's basic fundamentals. From basic skating and balance training to the most advanced edge training, Corey will enhance your team's skills and abilities. Each player will leave better than when they came. Theory and positioning can be covered during the sessions by going over breakouts, forechecking, face-off alignments and responsibilities. Most of the time coaches are doing a great job explaining and coaching but run into frustration when they feel, for whatever reason, they are not connecting with their players. A new, knowledgeable voice for the players to listen to helps in this situation.

Coach Mentoring
By reviewing practice plans, strategies and philosophies, Corey will act as a mentor to coaches. Corey will work with the coach both on and off the ice to showing precise methods to teach various skills and skating methods as well as how to instruct quickly and concisely. Neilson Athletics will assist and direct coaches towards proper and efficient teaching and training techniques. Aside from taking the Canadian Coaching Levels, most coaches don't receive enough training.
